For anyone wishing to develop an awareness of the hazards associated with sharps and how to avoid injury and illness that may arise from sharps, needle-stick injuries, and blood borne viruses.

Course facts:

Accidental exposure to unscreened human blood or other tissues or body fluids may lead to infection with pathogens such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. This course aims to summarise the risks associated and the precautions that should be implemented when handling such material.

What you will learn:

Introduction - Arrangements, Course objectives, Introductions

What and where are sharps? - Range of items that are ‘sharps’, Where they are found and, Precautions to take to avoid injury.

The Law- The HSW Act, The Management Regulations and COSHH and the requirement for Risk Assessment.

Company requirements- PPE as required by the PPE Regulations. Requirements for containers. Disposal and the Duty of Care.

Employee Obligations -What employees are required to do regarding sharps and BBVs.

The Health Risks and what to do - Blood Borne Viruses and the physical injuries.What to do the event of a sharps injury. What to do in event of contact with bodily fluids

The safe handling of sharps - PPE and using the containers. Decontaminating the area.
