Here is a list of useful "buzz words" that will hopefully explain a few things. CITBConstruction Industry Training Board. AKA Cskills or Construction Skills The national training organisation for construction in the UK. ENHANCEMENT FUNDThe Enhancement Fund is a £50m resource aimed at engaging employers in Yorkshire and Humber to invest in skills development and therefore increase the skills base in the region. GAS SAFEA review was undertaken in 2006 by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) which concluded that there was a strong case for modernising the gas registration scheme to bring added benefits to gas consumers and gas engineers. Particular areas for improvements included: A clearer focus needed on gas safety. The need to simplify the registration and competence requirements for gas engineers without compromising safety or service standards CORGICORGI is the Council of Registered Gas Installers and is considered the leading authority for information on gas safety issues around the home. Today, CORGI also provides information and support for other trades including plumbing and electrical work. CDLA Professional and Career Development Loan is a bank loan. You make an agreement with a participating bank to borrow an amount between £300 and £10,000. Then once you've stopped studying, you pay it back in the normal way. The difference with a Professional and Career Development Loan is that the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) pays the interest on the loan while you're studying - and for one month afterwards. BPECBritish Plumbing Employers Council. BPEC Certification Ltd is responsible for a range of assessments and certifications for the Building Engineering Services sector. CITY & GUILDSCity & Guilds is the only awarding body solely dedicated to vocational learning with 1.5 million learners working towards a City & Guilds qualification every year. City & Guilds awards over 50% of all National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), and through our partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), C&G award over 90% of all NVQs in Construction. CITY & GUILDS 6129The Plumbing Technical Certificate gives you the underpinning knowledge and theory required to enter the plumbing industry. This also provides some portfolio evidence for the 6089 Plumbing NVQ. This is currently being phased out and will no longer be recognised by the industry. ACSAccredited Certification Scheme. ACS Certificates of Gas Safety Competence are valid for 5 years and are required by the industry to work on gas. Valid ACS Certificates are required by Capita for Gas Safe registration. ACS assessments include the Core Gas Safety (CCN1) module which is mandatory and then typically a combination of the following modules depending upon your specialist areas: Central Heating (CENWAT1) Water Heaters (WAT1) Now no longer available since it has been "merged" with CENWAT (see above) Gas Fires (HTR1) Cookers (CKR1) Ducted Warm Air (DAH1) Meters (MET1) Leisure (LEI1) DEADomestic Energy Assessor: Undertakes Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) as part of the Home Information Pack (HIPS) required to sell a domestic property. 17TH EDITIONThe 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2008) was published in January 2008 and is effective from 1st July 2008. As of this date, all commercial, domestic and industrial wiring installations must be designed, constructed, inspected, tested and certificated to meet the requirements of BS7671:2008. NICEICNational Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. NICEIC acts as the electrical contracting industry's independent voluntary regulatory body for electrical installation safety throughout the UK. It maintains and publishes registers of electrical contractors that have been assessed against Scheme requirements, including the national electrical safety standard BS 7671, and the IEE Wiring Regulations. PAT TESTINGPortable Appliance Testing. All electrical equipment should be maintained and checked regularly to ensure its safe and in good repair. Those responsible for electrical equipment maintenance (such as landlords or managers) should ensure equipment is maintained in a safe condition, information is available to equipment users to ensure safety, safe procedures for inspection and testing are used and records of inspection and testing are maintained. PART PPart P is a part of the Building Regulations which has been introduced by government and affects all electrical work carried out in dwellings. People carrying out electrical work in homes and gardens in England and Wales should follow the rules set out in Part P of the Building Regulations to ensure that they are complying with the law. These rules are designed to ensure that electrical work is safe. Firms registered with an authorised Competent Person Scheme for Part P are able to self-certify that their electrical installation work complies with Building Regulations and, thus, will not have to notify, or be subject to inspection by Building Control bodies. PART LPart L has been introduced in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of the government's strategy to address global warming and imposes the requirement on building work that: "Reasonable provision shall be made for the conservation of fuel and power in buildings by: limiting heat gains and losses: through thermal elements and other parts of the building fabric; and from pipes, ducts and vessels used for space heating, space cooling and hot water services; providing and commissioning energy efficient fixed building services with effective controls; and providing to the owner sufficient information about the building, the fixed building services and their maintenance requirements so that the building can be operated in such a manner as to use no more fuel and power than is reasonable in the circumstances." ELC & ELCASEnhanced Learning for the Armed Forces The aims of the ELC scheme are: To provide funding support to Service personnel who wish to enhance their educational, academic, professional or vocational achievements by pursuing higher level learning and who face substantial financial expenditure in doing so.
